Milk or Meat

For many years I didn’t read devotionals. I thought that they were too simple and frequently taken out of context. I read straight from the Bible, and then I would read books by people like William Lane Craig, a brilliant man, but over my reading level. I have spent almost as much time with dictionaries, and encyclopedias, as I did reading his books. I feel privileged to have read books written by towering minds for God, I also now realize that these were mostly brain food. I needed devotionals (milk) to wash them down with to nourish my heart.

We should all strive for a better understanding of the higher things of God, but we need milk on occasion too. If you only read devotionals, I would like to encourage you to read the Bible a chapter at a time and read books like
“The Case for Christ: A Journalist’s Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus” by Lee Stobel

If John Lennox, and William Lane Craig are your regular fare, periodically pick up a simple devotional, and relish getting back to the basics of Christianity.
While most people could use a little more spiritual meat, milk is good for us too. Sometimes we all need to feel like a kid again!

Just to be clear, I am not talking about dumbing down Christianity, I am talking about letting your mind rest, so your heart can grow.

  1. Well said here. I do like deep theology and used to think I wanted to really go that way. Now, I don’t so much. I love simple devotionals. Which is good, because that is practically the only thing I write for the most part.
