Sleepless in the Physics Lab 7 Cosmic Questions That Induce Insomnia by Regis Nicoll Article originally appeared in Salvo 13

A virulent strain of insomnia has hit a special group of folks: physicists. According to an article in NewScientist.com, there are seven conundrums that can keep these crumple-jacketed oracles “tossing and turning in the wee hours.” The article was reporting on a panel discussion held in October 2009 at the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Canada. Upon being asked, “What keeps you awake at night?” the group of physicists came up with the following list of vexing questions. Disappointingly, their discussion failed to reveal the depth of these mysteries and why they are so discomforting. To better understand the troubled spirits of scientists, I thought it would be helpful to fill in some detail for each of the seven questions.

Things that are pure and lovely

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

I have been a complainer for most of my life. While I have certainly had  more things to complain about then many, it hasn’t gotten me anywhere. Over the last year I have started to make an effort to be more positive, while positive thinking isn’t magical, it does help. Not only is my life better, but I feel like I have become more likeable.

Christians are often viewed as a bunch of complaining killjoys.
Just as you get tired of people who are always complaining, they get tired of us. While yes, there are times when we must speak out against the bad,
that isn’t what we should be about. We should be about the love of God, and helping people see him more clearly. Just as a good earthly father does more than setting rules, he loves us, has good times with us, and helps us… Our Heavenly Father wants those other things for us as well.
We as Christians are supposed to be a reflection of God to help non-Christians see him more clearly. Non-Christians already know about the rule setting God, they need a better view of why he sets those rules. It isn’t because he is a cosmic killjoy, it is because those rules set us on the path for a richer life.

The Medieval Period was a Dark Age? Don’t be Ignorant. | Intellectual Takeout

Too often in conversations and on social media, people will conflate the Dark Ages with the time of Medieval Europe. The motivation behind the argument has roots in both the Protestant Reformation and then the Enlightenment and their joint toppling of Christendom Europe. For the past to be rejected and a new order to be created, even today it is of benefit to continue to cast a time of strong Christianity such as the Medieval period as ignorant and the times of the Ancients and the Enlightenment as times of learning – even ignoring that many in the Enlightenment were devout Christians. In doing so, Christianity, particularly Catholicism, looks like a relic of a time when ignorance was prevalent and only through the rejection of that religion can we advance.

FOR GOD’S GLORY, REACHING THE HURTING, BROKEN AND THOSE LOST AND IN DESPAIR

“Don’t beat yourself up…

Children of God,

“Don’t beat yourself up if things are not going your way. Instead consider those shortcomings a blessing in disguise; for in the journey of failure lies success and not defeat.” ©Emma Ortega Negrete

I know that in life when things don’t seem to go our way; we tend to hurt ourselves by doing things that do not feed our spirit. We get gloomy and find anger and bitterness as to why the World shouldn’t be smiling while we have a frown on our face.
