“God of the Gaps” Excuse is Circular Reasoning — Logos Apologia

Christians are often accused of having a God of the gaps mentality, but does the naturalist come out any better by saying that in the future we will have the answer that won’t require God?  I don’t really think so. It is a guess, based on their preconceived notions. There is a big difference though, as Christians, we know that God works in two main ways; naturally, and supernaturally. We are open to all sorts of scientific explanations. Naturalist, on the other hand rule out some possibilities before they have collected a piece of evidence.
It is OK to keep looking for evidence to confirm or deny your hypothesis, but at some point you have to go with the evidence you already have. More and more people are beginning to believe that it took an intelligent agent to create the universe as it is how with the ability to support life. This isn’t just a guess, or lazy thinking, it is inferring the best possible explanation

  1. Christians are often accused of having a God of the gaps mentality, but does the naturalist come out any better by saying that in the future we will have the answer that won’t require God?

If a person was to claim that in the future we will have an answer to problem X which does not invoke a deity, the burden of proof is certainly upon that person to support such a claim.

However, if a person simply points out that ignorance of such an answer is not evidence for a contrary position, that is entirely sound.

  2. You may have misunderstood me. I am not making an argument from ignorance.
A thousand years from now most people will not have heard of the 4 people on Mt. Rushmore. But if they wandered across it they would be justified if assuming that Mt. Rushmore was not a product of natural erosion like the surrounding mountains are. Mt. Rushmore displays characteristics that can not be explained by natural forces.

The universe contains a very fine tuned set of constants,
Just the fact that the universe formed 13 billion years ago instead of flying apart to fast for it to collect into planets, suns, solar systems… and did not collapse in on itself makes us incredibly lucky. There are more than 600 constants that had to be fine tuned for life to exist. It is like we won the lottery hundreds of times. Yet we know if we were to win the lottery three times the feds would be knocking down our door to take us to prison, because no one is that lucky, unless someone in the background is pulling the strings to make that kind of luck.
