Should Christians Endorse Gun Control?

Violence is an ever-growing problem that breaks my heart. Every time a mass shooting occurs I am crying  just as loudly as everyone else, but I do not believe gun control is the answer for many reasons.

The US Constitution guarantees that Americans have the right to keep and bare arms. Our Founding Fathers had fought using guns to get away from a repressive government. If they had meant that only people in the military were allowed to have guns they would have basically been declaring themselves criminal because they were not part of a recognized government when they fought in the war.

Criminals do not care what the law says. Most drugs are either controlled or illegal, but it has done nothing to stop criminals  from attaining drugs that they have no right to have. The only thing drug control has accomplished is to make it more difficult for law abiding citizens with a legitimate need for the drugs to attain them.  I have no reason to believe that gun control will work any better then drug control has.

Another reason I don’t like the idea of gun control is because of tyrants like Adolf Hitler. The first thing that criminal governments do is to take away guns from law abiding citizens, thereby making it easy to murder anyone the government does not like. Imagine how much shorter World War 2 would have been if the average German citizen had the tools needed to fight against Hitler’s bloody regime.

There have been many cases where guns have saved lives. Just the other day a lady was at home with her nine year old twins when a recent parolee broke into her house. She grabbed her gun, and her kids and hid in the attic. When the robber actually hunted them down and found them she shot him.  A home invader who had already been in prison once  who was brazen enough to hunt down the occupants who were trying to hide would have certainly beat them with a tire iron he had in his hand, and most men are stronger then woman, so without that gun she and her kids would have been killed.

Which brings me to another the home invader did not have a gun, but was clearly willing and able to harm someone anyway. Even in the unlikely event that the government were somehow able to destroy every gun in the country they would not stop murders from taking place.  They would only make it easier for stronger people, especially men to kill weaker people like woman and children.

Guns are not the problem, sin is. It the church really wants to make a difference, instead of trying to talk guns away from the people they need to quit tickling ears and preach about the horrors of sin, and they need to train the members of every church to spread the word of the Gospel which is the real cure for sin.

Luke 22:36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
