Are you Ready?

1 Thessalonians 5:1-8 ESV
Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.

There are a lot of people who try to guess when the second coming will be, there are people who squandered everything they own because they were convinced that the second coming would be on a particular day, and they would not need anything anymore.
People have dropped out of school because they thought God would return before they graduated.  There have even been people who walked away from Christianity because someone convinced them that they knew Christ was coming back, and when the day past and Christ did not return they decided that all of Christianity must be a lie!  All of this trouble yet some Christians still try to name dates.

I have flash lights and lanterns all over my house.  I hate power outages!  Half the time they come at night when you can’t see your hand in front of your face.  I am prepared. Now I know where to go to get some light should my power go off during a storm.
But I don’t just sit in one place clutching my lantern during storms. I have work to do!  There will be plenty of time to rest when and if the power goes out.

I think we should look at the second coming in a similar way. We need to have our hearts prepared to be with Christ at all times, because even if we don’t live to see the second coming we never know when we will breathe our last. But we can’t sit around holding our lanterns either. We can’t dwell on the uncertain date of his return, because God has given us other things to think about that are happening right NOW!  If our friends and neighbors are not convinced of God’s grace no knowledge of the second coming will help them.  We can not fall into the trap others have fallen into and let our guesses about the second coming paralyze us, and our witness.
While it is OK to theorize about when the second coming will be sometimes, we need to stop making dates.  And start doing the things that Christ wants us to do; spreading the Gospel, searching the scriptures daily, feeding the hungry, comforting the sick and the hopeless,   we need to revive Christianity to the culture impacting purifier that it once was. Sitting on our fannies until Christ returns is not an option!
